At CNC Technical, we offer two types of repair: 1) refurbished and 2) repair; doing either requires knowledge of the product, knowledge of the application in the CNC, and the technical know-how to properly repair and test a unit.
What are the levels of board repair?
1) Refurbished - A refurbished product is one that has been restored to a like-new condition and is ready for resale. Refurbished products are inspected, repaired, and tested to ensure they meet the original manufacturer's specifications.
The process of truly refurbishing a drive, power supply, etc. is more involved than most people realize. Pulling a part off a machine, cleaning it up and changing a few components or adding a few jumpers isn't "refurbishing" in our world, that is known as "polishing a turd". Unfortunately, it is easy to sell these units as many unsuspecting customers won't know the difference at first glance; they only find out later, when the unit fails prematurely. Often times, these units end up in our shop after the fact and (sometimes) what work that was done on them is so poor that it has resulted in damage to the unit beyond what we would consider "repairable". Word of advice: if you are on EBay and someone is offering a "refurbished unit" for one-half the price of what we charge, you can be sure that it isn't refurbished to the same standard (nor do they probably have the same warranty).
Our process starts with a thorough cleaning; then repairs are made, upgrades are installed, and complete testing is done under real-world conditions in our custom simulators. When you purchase a unit or have your unit repaired by us, it arrives looking new. It isn't dirty, doesn't have stripped screws, globs of solder, jumpers all over the place, or parts that clearly don't look like they belong. We are doing our best to get you a product that is as close to new as possible and offering a real warranty to back that up (units come with either a 1 year or 18 month warranty and we now offer the option of purchasing an extension that doubles whatever warranty the unit comes with).
2) Repaired - A repaired product is simply one that was broken and is now working properly again. This may or may not include cleaning but will be fully tested to be sure that it works when it leaves our facility.
This is what we refer to as a "parts and labor" repair. There are various circumstances when this type of repair would be appropriate, but usually it happens when a customer sends their unit in for repair and the unit is clean, appears to be in above average condition and only needs a relatively simple repair to be made. If the unit is a large VAC spindle drive, the cost to fully refurbish would be considerably high, so we may recommend to the customer to do just a "parts and labor" and save some money. If there is any cleaning to be done, or maybe some other components that need to be replaced, we will take that into account when deciding if the parts and labor makes sense (typically, if the repair will cost more than 40% of a full refurbishment, we will recommend the full refurbishment). Units are still fully tested after the repair has been completed. This level of repair does not typically come with a warranty, but if the condition that was repaired ends up re-occurring with 30 days, the cost of the repair can be applied towards a full refurbishment of the unit. These types of repairs can be a great way for customers to get their unit repaired for a fraction of the cost.
